A very useful reference book on English grammar and usage。 It's quite thick， but you don't have to read through the whole book。 Consult it whenever you need。 The writing is accessible itself， but you have to have a basic understanding of English grammar to know how to use it， for the table of contents and the index are primarily based on grammar terms。 The book is more of a descriptive grammar book than a prescriptive one。 As such， it tells you how a language is actually used rather than how a l A very useful reference book on English grammar and usage。 It's quite thick， but you don't have to read through the whole book。 Consult it whenever you need。 The writing is accessible itself， but you have to have a basic understanding of English grammar to know how to use it， for the table of contents and the index are primarily based on grammar terms。 The book is more of a descriptive grammar book than a prescriptive one。 As such， it tells you how a language is actually used rather than how a language should be used。 The author aims to teach you the most practical usages， the kind of English that native speakers really use。 It's very different from most of the English grammar books here in Taiwan。 In Taiwan they get to decide what is correct and what is wrong， and tell you how English should be used。 But some usages they teach us are either archaic or awkward。 Native speakers would not use it。 Some are usages native speakers do use， but they told us it's wrong。 For instance， I was taught that McDonald's famous slogan "I'm Loving It" is grammatically wrong。 But this book says occasionally non-progressive verbs are used in progressive forms in order to emphasize the idea of change or development， e。g。 I'm liking it here more and more as time goes by。 So this kind of usage may be unusual， but we wouldn't go so far as to say it's wrong。 I highly recommend this book to all ESL learners。 。。。more

Widely held to be the "Bible" of English Language Teaching， Swan's book is useful as a reference but not the be-all-and-end-all that many people assume。 This is because it doesn't treat grammar as a meaning-making resource but rather a set of prescriptive rules that do not necessarily reflect real language in use。 I would recommend Lock's 'Functional English Grammar for Language Teachers' over this book any day。 However， one thing I like about Swan's book is its dictionary-style index， making it Widely held to be the "Bible" of English Language Teaching， Swan's book is useful as a reference but not the be-all-and-end-all that many people assume。 This is because it doesn't treat grammar as a meaning-making resource but rather a set of prescriptive rules that do not necessarily reflect real language in use。 I would recommend Lock's 'Functional English Grammar for Language Teachers' over this book any day。 However， one thing I like about Swan's book is its dictionary-style index， making it fairly easy to locate the grammar point in question。 As for its usefulness， I don't find it very 'practical' at all。 。。。more
